Origin of the name Greenpeace
The organization's name came by chance. On the occasion of the premiere organization to prevent a U.S. nuclear test in the Aleutian Islands, the activists had the idea to make and sell a "button" to help raise funds for the trip. It should contain the words 'Green' (green) and 'Peace' (peace), appearing in two separate flags, flown on board the vessel of the organization, then known as 'Do not Wave Committee' (Do not Make a Wave Committee). The words had been thought to express the idea of pacifism and environmental protection, however, seen on the flags and separated, they seemed too big to fit on a button, and were joined so was born the term 'Greenpeace', that became the name adopted by the organization.

History of Greenpeace
In 1971, motivated by the dream of a green and pacific world, a small group of activists weighed anchor of Vancouver, in Canada, in an old fishing boat. These activists, founders of Greenpeace, believed that a group of some individuals could make the difference.   Currently, Greenpeace is an international organization that privileges environmental campaigns on a global scale. With headquarters in Amsterdam, in Holland, Greenpeace has 2,8 national and regional million partners in the whole world and delegations that assure presence in 41 countries.

Founders of Greenpeace
According to the Greenpeace web page the founders were Dorothy and Irving Stowe, Marie and Jim Bohlen, Ben and Dorothy Metcalfe, and Robert Hunter. The book The Greenpeace Story states that the founders were Irving Stowe, Jim Bohlen and Paul Cote, a law student and peace activist. An interview with Dorothy Stowe, Dorothy Metcalfe, Jim Bohlen and Robert Hunter identifies the founders as Paul Cote, Irving and Dorothy Stowe and Jim and Marie Bohlen.

Greenpeace Poem

"One day the Earth will get sick.
The birds will fall from the sky, the seas will darken and appear dead fish in the flow of rivers.
When that day comes, the Indians lose their spirit.
But it will recover to teach man White reverence for the sacred land.

Here, then, all races will come together under the symbol of the rainbow to end the destruction.
It will be the time of the Warriors of the Rainbow. "
